1988-90 Leader in effort to keep Dos Pueblos High School open

1987-88 Treasurer, Coastal Preservation Coalition and Small Wilderness Area Preserves, for acquisition of the Wilcox property (now the Douglas Family Preserve)

1986-90 President, Committee for a Greater Santa Barbara, which promoted annexation of all or some of the Goleta valley to the City of Santa Barbara

1980-83 Board of Directors, President and Treasurer, Goleta Valley Community Center; the Center expanded its programs substantially during this time as its facilities were renovated; the Center also became a separate entity from the Goleta Union School District

1980-81 Chair, Santa Barbara High School District Facilities Organization Committee; this committee recommended re-organization of La Colina, La Cumbre, Santa Barbara Jr. High and Santa Barbara High and San Marcos from 3-3 (7th-9th grade, 10th-12th grade) to 2-4 (7th-8th grade, 9th-12th grade) model; this committee also recommended boundary changes among the three high schools that resulted in very improved ethnic balance at the high school level and increased total enrollment at Dos Pueblos High School, which were critical to it subsequently remaining open

1980 Suggested school transfer policies resulting in improved ethnic balance while retaining substantial freedom of transfers at elementary and secondary schools in Santa Barbara School and High School Districts

1979 Candidate for Santa Barbara Board of Education, finishing sixth of nine candidates for three seats; endorsed by SB Teachers Association,
